TELEOPERATION

Controlling a connected vehicle from a distant location

Belgian minister wants tele-operated vehicles on her road network from 2026

Terwijl While V-tron showed her innovations in Lommel at the by IMEC in the project Mobilidata organized test week (May 13-16, 2024) for tele-operated and autonomous driving, the Belgian Minister of Mobility, Lydia Peeters, expressed her desire to allow this form of vehicle control on the Belgian road network from 2026.

During the highly successful tests, cars and our truck drove over the course, where in our case, the steering took place from our facility in Deventer. So the test was not only remotely, but even internationally successful. There was a ‘safety driver’ in the truck, but he would only intervene if things went wrong, which fortunately was not necessary.

The tests in Lommel were not standard rounds, but simulations of speeds, cornering, highway conditions, smaller roads and obstacle avoidance. So we did very realistic tests with things that occur a lot in real traffic.

Tele-operation demonstrated to KLM on premises of VOS Transport Group

On May 23, V-tron, together with partners Roboauto and KPN, demonstrated the operation of a remote-controlled truck on the premises of VOS Transport Group in Deventer to KLM.

This demonstration was also successful from our office, which is also located in Deventer. In the test, we used Roboauto’s technology that allows us to drive wirelessly over KPN’s regular 5G network.

V-tron has tested tele-operation extensively in the project 5G Blueprint of the European Commission. In this we have shown that tele-operation is not only possible, but can certainly make a major contribution to solving personnel shortages for transport, logistics, bus & coach companies and when working with hazardous materials.

During the test week in Lommel it was already demonstrated that tele-operation is internationally possible.

The possibilities of tele-operation are endless and we are ready for them!

Our tele-operation in full view!

In addition to the extensive attention from the Flemish government, our tests in Lommel, Belgium were covered by all major national media.

In the videos below you can see, from left to right, the reports from VRT, TVL, Trends and Nieuwsblad BE.

Also tele-operation in movies in Hollywood

Together with HAN Automotive Research and Jan Wijnakker BV we are creating a toolbox for remote control of stunt cars in movies being shot in Hollywood. This project is called ‘CCAM in Hollywood‘ and is cofinanced by Regieorgaan SiA.

In Hollywood, the project is running on schedule. A master’s student from HAN has developed the control algorithm for the test scenario. He graduated at the end of May 2024.

The algorithm he designed controls a scenario in which two cars drive toward each other and just miss each other. This algorithm steers the two cars, based on their position and orientation and controls throttle/brake/steer signals from the autonomous car. This complex algorithm is a crucial part of the project, and its successful graduation is an important step in the process.

Currently, the team is in the process of installing all the components into the car. The next step is downtime testing and then the first driving tests are planned.

Parallel to these developments, preparations are underway for the final stunt scenario. The final steps in this are being taken this month. The goal is to carry out the first full tests of the stunt scenario in mid to late June, using both the developed algorithm and the Drive-by-Wire car.If these tests are successful, this will represent a major step forward in the project.
